While physical activity is essential for everybody’s health, data shows that equity-deserving groups have greater barriers to participating in physical activity. To understand the barriers that diverse families face and their recommendations for greater inclusion in physical activities, we collaborated with partner organizations to create the Families Getting Active Report. We’re excited to share it with you today!
The report centres the voices of families and youth impacted by systemic inequities across BC – Indigenous families; rural and remote; low-income; newcomer and refugee families; 2SLGBTQIA+ youth; and families of children with disabilities.
Conversations within these focus groups showed that families value and want to be physically active and benefit greatly from targeted, community-informed supports. and every recommendation comes directly from the participants (although some have been edited slightly for clarity).
The Families Getting Active project brought together focus groups of parents and youth, working with a stellar group of people and organizations including Ahmad Tamim Sharifzai, Canucks Autism Network, Centre for Family Equity, Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council of BC (I·SPARC), McCreary Centre Society, Mosaic Family Centre, Q-Munity, RE-IMAGYN BC, Sunny Hill Centre and YMCA BC, to speak about barriers that families may face when trying to sign up for or engage in community-based physical activity and their suggested solutions.

Together, we can support ALL families on their physical activity journey.
