Active Play Club provides a unique opportunity for elementary and middle school children to engage in unstructured play on their school grounds after the school day ends.
Due to various factors – transportation and cost barriers, access to screens, and lack of opportunity – BC kids are less physically active than ever, especially children whose families face additional barriers. Active Play Club is a great way to increase physical activity opportunities for kids in BC!
Whether kids choose to swing on the monkey bars, kick around a soccer ball, or play “The Floor is Lava,” they have space to be active in their own way. Program leaders provide light supervision and a caring environment. In this space, children are free to explore, create, and interact, fostering their physical, social, and emotional development.
The goals of Active Play Club are to:
- Provide a safe and supportive environment for kids to be active, explore risks, and learn about themselves, their friends, and the world around them.
- Reduce barriers associated with other after-school programming, like cost and transportation.
With support from the Government of British Columbia, BC Alliance for Healthy Living offers grants to help in the running of your Active Play Club.

“Active Play Club is an amazing initiative that families really benefited from. The program was community minded, accessible to all, and brought about new friendships.
It was beneficial for neurodivergent kids who may not do well in heavily structured extracurricular activities. Kids who generally play on devices after school were now able to stay on school grounds longer to play with friends.
It also released a lot of the pressure of getting to school for that 2:30pm pick up. We are very excited and motivated to keep this going for the next school year.”
