Physical activity is important at every age, supporting physical and mental health, social connection and overall well-being. Regular physical activity is recognized as one of the most effective ways to decrease risk for chronic diseases, including heart disease, stroke, type-2 diabetes, and several types of cancers. Removing barriers to physical activity supports all BC residents in leading healthy lives.

Supported by the Province of British Columbia, the Active Communities Grant Program provides grants of up to $20,000 to Indigenous and local governments to create or expand physical activity opportunities. We are now accepting applications from July 7, 2026 until September 18, 2026.

Funding is available for up to 25 communities, and projects should benefit people who face barriers to regular physical activity from equity-owed groups. Our website has examples of previously funded projects. Please note that we are no longer funding infrastructure development projects.

The application is available to download as a fillable PDF or Word document.

We accept applications from First Nations Bands, First Nations Tribal Councils, Métis Chartered Communities, Municipalities, and Regional Districts.
