Dear Editor,

With the provincial election coming up, I’m writing to flag some issues that I think are important and should be part of the public discussion.

A focus on healthy living and social supports can do two things: reduce pressure on the healthcare system and increase the number of people contributing to the strength of this province.  I would like the candidates running for office to consider all the ways to build healthy living into our everyday lives.

By building sidewalks, streets and trails where people feel comfortable to walk or bike we can improve activity rates.  Ensuring fresh produce is available and affordable at local stores (across the province) could improve our diets and reduce obesity rates. Affordable housing is the most basic requirement for health and needs to be expanded. Early childhood development programs and quality childcare give children the best start in life and allow their parents to be actively employed - the gaps in these services need to bridged.

All of these influence our ability to be healthy, avoid disease as well as improve our life expectancy.

I’m looking forward to reading about how all candidates plan to address these broader health issues.

Sincerely,
